Professional baseball – America’s pastime – for decades was a shining example of diverse, integrated rosters that elevated the game and inspired generations of young athletes. Participation at all levels of baseball among African Americans has dwindled, however, and in 2023, Major League Baseball had the fewest Black players on starting rosters since 1955. The League and associated organizations have made strides to reverse this trend in recent years, but a more concentrated and dedicated effort is needed to ensure higher levels of Black youth participation, which is vital to creating educational and economic opportunities for individuals and bringing a love for the game back to entire communities.
